Some may assume that SUVs are one of the safest cars because it's meant for driving up mountains or rough roads. But this type of vehicle is one of the most likely to topple over the road.
It is because of gravity, body width, over speeding, failure to obey signs and traffic lights, driving dangerously for the weather conditions, driving under the influence (DUI or DWI), reckless driving, car defects, damaged road surfaces and broken traffic lights.
According to a survey, there are more 15 to 20 year old male drivers who get involved in fatal accidents. Also, males are usually responsible for traffic fatalities in 2006.
One recent accident in Nevada was a woman killed and 11 passengers were injured. They rode a Ford Expedition which blew a tire and toppled on Interstate 15 near Sloan Road.
According to the witnesses, "the right rear tire of the Expedition blew out. The vehicle then veered sharply across both travel lanes and rolled over. Several passengers were thrown from the vehicle."
Steps to take in an overturned SUV
Surprisingly, the design of SUVs is also one of the reasons why it topples over. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 100,000 people die each year due to SUV rollover accidents.
• Assess the situation. Try to gather your bearings and understand what position you are in.
• Check for injuries. As long as you are conscious, you may be able to identify what if any injuries you have sustained.
• Check the status of your passengers. If anyone is in the vehicle with you, check to see where they are and if they have suffered injury.
• Get out of the vehicle. If possible, try to get out of the vehicle. Overturned vehicles may catch fire or may be at risk of being hit by other vehicles on the roadway.
• When exiting the vehicle, make sure not to get hit by other vehicles.
• Help passengers and others involved in the accident. It is important to help others, but be careful not to move anyone who has suffered head, neck, or spine injuries.
• Call for help. Seek assistance from other drivers and call for emergency assistance. It is important to make sure that the authorities (including the police) are called to the scene of any accident.
