Rainy days, slippery roads, road bumps, are some of the causes of major truck accidents—which usually happen in California. So what are the steps to do when you are involved in a truck accident? You may follow these procedures to ensure your safety: • Stop your vehicle- but never leave the accident scene to protect yourself from criminal prosecution. Whether you are involved in an accident with another vehicle or pedestrian. • Use flares or place a reflector or even your flashlight to warn other vehicles passing by. • Call a doctor or ambulance if someone is injured. Especially if the injury is great or the accident is massive, don't delay calling an emergency response team to prevent worsening of the victims' conditions. • Call the police in the area- they know how to handle such accidents. They will handle any emergency operations and investigation of the accident. • It is a requirement for you and the involved party to exchange your identification information. But if you hit an unattended vehicle, you should locate the operator or owner to give them/him your contact details. But if not, you may leave your info, including what happened, written on a paper. Take note of the following also: o Make notes of the important aspects of the collision to help you remember them. o Diagram the exact position of the vehicles before and after the accident. o Step off skid marks and other important distances. • File accident report/s- vehicle insurance company can immediately take action and work with your insurance representatives during the investigation. • There are instances when you or the other party may be faced with arrest charges. It doesn't mean you are automatically guilty but a statement or plea of guilty to a traffic ticket may be used as an admission. Filing damages against the victim or dealing with the damages per se is complicated. You may lose your job, sustain injuries or properties. But you can reimburse because of your insurance. If you are the victim, you are entitled to receive reimbursements of the following: • Nature, extent and duration of injuries • Pain and suffering from injuries • Disability, both temporary and permanent • Reasonable expenses resulting from injury, including medical and hospital expenses • Loss of income • Value of damage to property Claiming damages reimbursements has to go through legal process. And having a lawyer to help you and guide you will make things easier for you.
