Multiple uses of a strobe light

The ability of a strobe light to flash at various frequencies has made it extremely useful for both industrial applications and entertainment purposes. It is used in emergency vehicles, for signaling, car shows, photography, and there are even computer programs that can give a strobe effect to the screensaver.

A strobe light mechanism allows the users to produce regular flashes of lights at chosen intervals. The flashing can be controlled to be slow or fast, depending upon which an object may appear to be frozen or to be in motion. Ever since this lighting mechanism was introduced in the beginning of the 1930s, it has found use in a variety of applications.

A very common use of a strobe light today is in emergency vehicles, especially when the light needs to be fitted in a concealed manner. A strobe light can be fitted as a hideaway light into the headlight of a vehicle and will be completely invisible till it is activated. Strobe lights are also extensively used in off-road car shows where multicolored strobes are used on cars to produce moving lights that can go up and down, to keep beat with the rhythm of the background music.

A laser flare strobe light can be flashed to give a signal to a distance of more than 20 miles. And strobe lights that are waterproof to several feet, and can be seen from a height of about 5 miles vertically, come programmed for SOS signaling and are used by those who go out in sailing vessels as well as by rescue workers.

Strobe light is also used extensively in photography. It is helpful in photography because a strobe flash can be of an extremely short duration, as little as one thousandth of a second or even less. As the duration is so short, it is unlikely that the person or scene that is being photographed would move within that period. Besides that, since strobe light is similar to daylight in color, mixing it with daylight is also easy. The light that comes out of a strobe tube is typically strong, and where softer lighting is required, photographers use various accessories like soft-boxes, screens, and umbrellas to soften the light.

There is a java script program that demonstrates the strobe light effect with the help of a computer monitor or a TV screen. The stroboscopic effect, which typically freezes action in each flash, is used here for merely entertainment purposes. To get the full visual effect of a flashing strobe light, the program has to be run in a completely dark room. If you can have someone move or dance against the screen, the person will be seen frozen in every strobe flash.

There are screen savers these days, which make the candles or other lights on the image flicker in strobe flashes. Strobe light screensavers are also available which can give a strobe effect to the keyboard. This is not a substitute for the regular screensaver but is installed as an addition to an existing one. When the normal screensaver is in an active mode, this add-on highlights parts of the keyboard with strobe flashes.

A strobe light used for different entertainment purposes is always set to flash less than 10 times per second because too frequent flashing of the strobe light can trigger epileptic fits on some people. Still, before exposing others to any type of strobe light, the operator should tell them about the connection between photosensitive epilepsy and strobe flashes and warn them against too much exposure especially if they are prone to headaches or if their system is sensitive to strong lights.
