Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a difficult medical condition to deal with. This is caused by head traumas or "oxygen deprivation." Dizziness, headaches and problems with your vision and hearing are three possible signs that you may have suffered a brain injury.
After an accident, you may lose consciousness, vomit multiple times, develops severe headache or stiff neck, unusual drowsiness or behaves abnormally. You may have sustained a head injury.
"TBI can occur when any outside force impacts the head with enough force to cause the brain to move within the skull, or if the force fractures breaks the skull and causes direct trauma to the brain. The stress from rapid movement of the head can pull apart nerve fibers in the brain and actually cause physical damage to brain tissue," according to an online California medical journal.
Cheryl Hogarth had major brain surgery because of a Ping-Pong sized ball tumor. She, at 37, was informed she only had six months to live. Her malignant tumor was inoperable. She went underwent Gamma Knife radiation.
"It is a no-knife surgery that blasts its target with hundreds of high-intensity radiation beams in a single session. There was none of the cutting, bleeding, general anesthesia, ear-to-ear scar or long recovery associated with traditional craniotomy," explained in a New York Times article.
After two years, she's a survivor. She still goes to the hospital for chemotherapy to supplement the Gamma Knife treatment. Luckily, the tumor has not grown.
But not all cases are miraculous like hers. You only have one brain and when it is damage, it is in most cases irreversible. With obstetric negligence, it deals with the tragedy of mismanaged labor and delivery to newborn babies. Usually happens during caesarian operation of pregnant women.
There are undiagnosed head injuries, which can escalate to significant cerebral swelling with brain stem compression and secondary injury. These can result to neuronal, metabolic and other functional abilities.
Also it affects cognition, speech language communication, memory, attention and concentration, reasoning, abstract thinking, physical function, psycho-social behavior, and information processing.
