Compared to more conventional light bars that used incandescent lights, lightbar LED lights are doing better in so many ways and is in the forefront of popularity. Its only handicap is its cost. Experiments are being conducted to overcome this problem so that lightbar LED lights could soon be the best in the lighting firmament.
Emergency vehicles rely on a combination of warning mechanisms to control traffic on the streets and get easy passage. These are audio warning mechanisms like sirens and visual warning mechanisms of differently patterned halogen, strobe, and LED lights. Among the different visual warning devices, the more popular in use are the lightbar LED lights, which relies completely on LED technology. Even before LED technology became the preferred choice for lighting requirements, light bars had come into use. Earlier light bars were rough and ready contraptions where a couple of lights and a siren were accommodated on a metal bar by the vehicle using departments. Later, large-scale production of light bars in different color combinations was started to cater to the requirements of differently sized vehicles. In the early stages, however, it was mainly incandescent lights that were used in light bars. With the arrival of LED, large-scale manufacture of lightbar LED was started. Since LED lights had many benefits over more conventional lighting technologies, emergency vehicle users readily accepted these light bars. Since LED lights are very energy efficient, it puts only limited strain on the electrical system of the vehicles, compared to other types of light bars. Heat generation is also very much less when a lightbar LED is used. If the light bar is mounted inside the vehicle, the vehicle interior does not get heated up so that the air conditioning system of the vehicle is not taxed much. This too translates into energy saving besides the saving due to the low power consumption of LED lights. In the case of a larger lightbar LED light that is mounted on top of a vehicle, the lesser heat generation may not translate into any immediate energy saving. But the limited heat emission to the atmosphere is highly beneficial to the environment. If we calculate the combined reduction in heat emission managed by thousands of emergency vehicles sporting lightbar LED lights instead of more conventional lights, the heat prevention could be substantial. In this era where people live under the threat of global warming, this greening effect is very important. LED light bars are also used for accent lighting or cove lighting in commercial buildings, or in homes in foyers, living rooms, and kitchens. lightbar LED lights used for such decorative lighting will vary in size based on the area to be lit and will be a combination of two or more light bars. Such light bars offer many color choices and light intensities and will have mounting clips that can be rotated in 360o. Smaller lightbar LED lights of similar functionalities are used in display cases and cabinets for focused lighting. Everything about lightbar LED lights is positive and it is a quantum leap in lighting technology. The only downside is that it is expensive. Attempts are being made to make cheaper the production of sapphire substrate, which is used in the manufacture of LED. Alternatively, studies are also being made to use silicon wafers in its place. If these succeed, the only handicap of these lights is also likely to be remedied.
