General Electric (GE) Co. had a $500 lawsuit filed against them for demoting a female lawyer who had an executive position.
The suit aimed to prevent GE from committing the same unethical practices. Lorene Schaefer said the salary between male and female employees differ thus is unfair. Moreover, the position was paid less than the men.
According to reports, GE put her on administrative leave so that the other lawyer can go in. Apparently they do not consider her enough for her current position. Her salary was quoted as $380,000 apart from the bonuses she receives.
But Gary Sheffer, GE spokesperson said her career with the company shows how they give opportunities to women opportunity to have a career growth inside their company.
Gender discrimination is the unequal treatment of men and women. It is also considered as unfair. In the office, it involves different working conditions, salaries, hiring, promotion or bonuses to both sex.
Another form of gender discrimination is sexual harassment. In the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964:
1) To fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his [or her] compensation, terms, or privileges of employment, because of such individual's sex or
2) To limit, segregate, or classify employees or applicants for employment in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise affect [the individual's] status as an employee, because of such individual's sex
It also applies to on the job or internship programs.
Legal help for gender discrimination
For the past few years, the Congress and the courts have done several steps to combat this type of discrimination. Legal action is necessary if the employer wants to file a suit against the opposite sex. An employment lawyer can help the victim to know his rights and to know how to pursue such case.
