Bicycle rules are stated with the state's vehicle code that governs all vehicle laws. As commonplace as cheesy movies could portray couples riding bikes past a flower garden, accidents can happen—even as morbid as Texas Gov. Rick Perry's accident. He broke his right collarbone in a mountain biking accident, his office said. The governor's office said Perry suffered a minor abrasion. So to prevent this type of accident, the biker should know the protocols in riding one. Bike requirements 1. Brakes which will enable you (operator) to make brake wheel skid on dry, level, clean pavement 2. Handlebars raise to elevate your hands above the level of your shoulders in order to grasp the normal steering grip area 3. Size that can enable you to place it in an upright position with at least one foot on the ground, and restarting it in a safe manner. 4. At night time, a rider needs the following: o A lamp emitting a white light visible from a distance of 300 feet to the front and the sides of the bicycle o A red reflector mounted on the rear of the bicycle and visible from 500 feet to the rear of the bicycle o A white or yellow reflector mounted on each pedal visible 200 feet to the front and rear of the bicycle and a white or red reflector on each side to the rear of the center of the bicycle 5. A lamp or lamp combination, emitting a white light, attached to the operator and visible from a distance of 300 feet in front and from the sides of the bicycle. Prohibited • Hitch riding or attaching the bicycle to any streetcar or vehicle • To ride using a temporary, movable, or detachable seat • Allowing anyone to ride as a passenger other than on a separate attached seat • Carry any package, bundle, or article which prevents the operator from keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars. • Leaving a bicycle lying on its side on any sidewalk, or shall park a bicycle on a sidewalk in any other position • Impede or block the bikeway In the US, a bicyclist is fatally injured every six hours. There are many types of injuries that can be obtained in this type of accident. Types of Bicycle Accident Injury • Head and Neck Injury • Concussion • Broken Bones • Back injury • Disfigurement • Scrapes/ Bruises In 2005, 28 percent of all Bicyclist involved in accidents were under 18 according to the Department of Transportation. Improve Bicycle Safety • Learn to control bicycle speed or how to stop suddenly if needed • Wear a helmet and protective gear. • Always check the tires, brakes, crank set, and quick release. • Wear reflective gear at night • Obey traffic laws at all times. • Watch for hazards and know the safest route
