Princess Diana Crash Draws Attention To Shoddy Safety

Engineering experts in Australia have said that if Princess Diana had suffered the fatal crash in their country, instead of in England, she would not have died. It was recently reported that the Princess may have suffered whiplash or concussion but would not have been killed if her car was on a road in Australia. These assertions are being made by a former mechanical engineer of a large insurance company called NRMA.

In an article on the website of ‘The Daily', ex-engineer Charles Priest said he was shocked that: "Despite numerous investigations since her death in 1997, no one had suggested the absence of barriers in the Paris tunnel was a contributing factor." The verdict found by a Jury in London this month has been that the princess and Dodi Al-Fayed were unlawfully killed. Grossly negligent driving by the Princess's chauffeur and paparazzi photographers who were in reckless pursuit of the couple's car have been blamed for the crash.

Drink driving and failure to use seatbelts were also causes cited by the jury. Charles Priest told the Australian press that the poor engineering standards in the tunnel were a huge issue which had been overlooked. Perhaps if the car had been driven in such dangerous circumstances in Australia, those in the car would have suffered whiplash or been hit on head but they would not have died.

Preist said that photos of the tunnel are frightening because they lack the simple safety precautions which are standard in Australia. "Concrete fitted barriers are throughout Australia," he said. "You never see a buttress without a barrier here. One of the major contributing factors was the lack of decent engineering practices." He added: "It's been completely missed and it's so obvious to me - I'm sure she wasn't the first to die because of this and she won't be the last."

Something must be done to prevent accidents like this occurring again. Australian statistics for traffic accidents and crashes are proportionately much better than figures for the UK and France. Some reasons for this must be cultural but a lot is also probably owed to superior engineering. If the Paris Tunnel had the engineering practices of Australia, the Princess would certainly have suffered some injuries , but not to the extent that she would have died.

"The Mercedes would have struck the barrier, it would have been a decent blow because of the speed at which they were travelling and at that point the driver would have lost control." The engineering expert explained. "He would have broken a thumb or finger or wrist, the vehicle would have gone across the road and collected an oncoming car if there had been one, or hit the other side and come to rest in the middle of the road."

Three people were hurt recently when an ambulance in Tyneside crashed. The female driver and two members of ambulance crew suffered neck injuries and were taken to South Tyneside District Hospital. If engineering practices for the Paris tunnel had been better, Princess Diana might have been treated for the same injuries as these unfortunate crash victims. David Preist firmly maintains that if engineering for the tunnel was up to a reasonable standard: "Princess Diana might have had whiplash, maybe concussion but she wouldn't have been crushed to death."
