National Large Truck Accident Statistics - Information on Motor Vehicle Collisions |

Large trucks are a reality on the freeways and roads where automobiles drive. An accident involving a large truck and a car can have dire consequences. There are several government agencies that track and monitor the statistics of these trucks and their accidents. These statistics are from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, FMCSA. In the past 20 years, the number of large trucks on the road has increased by 58 percent, while their involvement in fatal crashes over the same time period has dropped by 10 percent. Alcohol involvement in accidents with large trucks has declined by 44 percent in the past 10 years. The majority of fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred on weekdays. In 75 percent of the cases, a collision was the event that caused a fatality in a truck crash. An estimated 34 percent of fatal truck crashes occurred at night. Out of nearly 400,000 truck accidents reported in 2007, one percent had at least one fatality while 18 percent had at least one injury. Large trucks were responsible for 8 percent of fatal accidents in 2007. An estimated 4 percent of all motor vehicle injuries for 2007 were a result of a large truck crash. A review of large truck accident statistics reveal that while their numbers continue to rise, their accident occurrences are on the decline. This is certainly due to several factors. Since the instances of large truck accidents involving alcohol are on the decline, it is clear the truck drivers are becoming safer drivers by abstaining from alcohol while they're on the road. Since the roads are most crowded on the weekdays, it stands to reason that there would be more accidents involving large trucks; however, statistics show that their responsibility for fatal accidents is a very low number. Even with the growing number of large trucks on the road, they don't pose as much of a danger of a fatal crash as they have in the past. This is due to better standards of education and licensing for truck drivers. As we get more used to sharing the road with large trucks, we become safer in their presence.
