Motorcycle drivers and passengers are predisposed to injuries in a crash, most often due to being thrown off the motorcycle. Bodily impact with another vehicle, roadway and stationary objects, such as light posts and guardrails, can cause blunt force trauma injuries. Injury to the lower limbs is the most common injury to motorcyclists. Fracture of the tibia and fibula occurs in thirty percent of lower limb injury cases. Lower limb fractures were present in approximately one-half of all motorcycle accidents that resulted in injuries. Other injuries to the upper and lower limbs include sprains, strains, shattered bones, severed limbs, and torn ligaments or tendons. Approximately 13 percent of all injuries were broken arms. Closed head injuries are frequently sustained. A closed head injury means an injury to the brain from its forcible movement within the skull. Closed head injuries have no visible wound. These types of injuries can be difficult to diagnose and have serious consequences. Lacerations, broken facial bones, and fractured skulls are possible. While a helmet offers greater protection, it does not grant an absolute safeguard against head injuries. Spinal injuries may be soft tissue damage to muscles, slipped discs, compression fractures, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction and spinal cord severance. A spinal cord injury can be grievous, with paraplegia, quadriplegia or, even, death resulting. It is estimated 10 percent of injuries are spinal. The emotional outflow of a motorcycle accident is often overlooked. The reality is many victims suffer from a condition called post traumatic stress disorder. Post traumatic stress disorder causes sleep disorders, obsessive replay of the accident, avoidance of the accident location and fear of riding a motorcycle again. A frequent consequence of serious injury to motorcyclists and their passengers is, unfortunately, death. It is estimated that 80 percent of motorcycle accident victims who suffer multiple grave injuries will die. Article Source: http://www.ArticleBlast.com |
