Perfect Your St Patrick's Day Party

If there's one time of the year you can expect to find Irish cheer around every corner, it has to be St Patrick's Day. The popular holiday, a day celebrating a patron saint of Ireland may not be an official day off in places such as the UK and America, but it's certainly treated as such by many enthusiastic revellers. If you're thinking of showing your solidarity for the big day, then there are plenty of things you can do to make sure your Paddy's Day celebrations are good enough to keep you going for another year.

Plan a party with a punch by playing up the things that give St Patrick's Day its own unique flavour. Perhaps the most quickly noticeable aspect of St Patrick's Day celebrations is the use of the colour green. From emerald wigs and costumes to more extreme expressions of support - such as the annual dying of the Chicago River! - you're likely to see green flashes in the places you'd least expect them on the big day.

This means that taking a leaf out of their book and giving your party a green theme is a great idea. From green jelly and green icing on your cupcakes to green shots or even green beer, you're sure to get people talking if you add some emerald aspects to your party - and all you need is a little food colouring. Of course, you'll want to offer some other alcoholic drinks for the purists, including Guinness and some good Irish whiskey.

Get your guests to join in too - make sure there are some traditional Irish songs playing and think about printing out the words on sheets of paper so that everyone can enjoy a good sing-along - even if they haven't heard them before. There's another thing Ireland is famous for that will add some laughter to your party, its limericks! Ask all of your guests to have a go at writing funny limericks and ask them to read them aloud, you're sure to find that the giggles come thick and fast.

However, one of the best ways to make sure that all of your guests get into the spirit of things this Paddy's Day is to tell them that they all have to wear Irish fancy dress for the night! Whatever you do, make sure you're ready to jig the night away from the moment you invite your first guest in.
