When choosing gifts for events, consideration should be given to musical instruments. There are multiple benefits to opting for instruments. Music is educational, therapeutic, and a great tool for teaching healthy behavior. Even babies enjoy making music. However, rattles are more than toys. Shakers attract the attention of infants, but also help them to track sounds and focus their attention and vision on an item. This teaches object recognition and understanding the world around them. The benefits of musical instruments also help encourage individuality, especially with older children. Nurturing Creative Expression Music teaches children to express themselves and make their own choices. Offering a variety of musical instruments is a great way to encourage self-expression. While kids' guitars may appeal to some children, the xylophone may appeal to others. Drums are a popular choice across the board, as percussion instruments allow a direct tactile connection to the rhythm and vibration of the instrument. With encouragement and practice, even the smallest children can choose instruments that best correspond with their personality or mood. Writing songs and playing them on musical instruments is another wonderful way to nurture creativity. Songwriting encourages children to have fun, while helping to teach rhythm and rhyme as well as release tension. Teaching Restraint Playing music teaches release, but it can also teach children self-control. Guitar solos may be okay for individual practice, but band sessions require restraint and proper timing. Group dynamics especially encourage this; however, self-discipline is required even on the individual level. For a song to be recognizable and enjoyed by an audience, a performer must read music, follow meter, and obey the rules necessary to produce harmonious sound from the chosen instrument. These procedures help children and adolescents to understand and appreciate the fruits of hard work and disciplined practice. Emotional Health Developing children require emotional releases. Normal daily frustrations for toddlers, children, or teenagers are just a part of life. From navigating new day care friendships to the pressures of school, parents must help guide their children toward healthy emotional expression when confronting stress. Talking is a good way for parents to model alternatives for acting out. However, there are other ways for the non-verbal child, whether a non-speaking infant or a reticent adolescent, to manage stress and anger. Music is an excellent choice for a stress reliever. Percussion instruments, for instance, permit a safe way to release frustration. The rhythmic syncopation can be stirring, but it can also be calming and meditative. Blasting away at a whistle or shaking maracas can also help release tension while having fun. Humor is a powerful tool for mental health.
