How to Take Care of New Ear Piercings

Almost everyone gets their ears pierced. Some mothers have their baby's ears pierced, while others wait until their child asks to have it done. Whatever age you are, taking care of your newly pierced ears is very important. If proper care is not taken, ears can become infected. If this happens, you'll find they are red, swollen and painful. There could be puss coming from the hole, and the earring is likely to get stuck in dried puss. You might even run a fever.

Gold earrings should be used for starters because they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Leave them in until the holes have healed, then take them out at night. For the first few days after piercing, apply antibiotic ointment to the lobes.

When cleaning your pierced ears, you should first wash your hands carefully. Rotate the post of the earring - that's the part that goes through the hole - to make sure it is loose. Use a cotton bud to apply rubbing alcohol to the ear lobe and especially the part that is pierced. When you remove your earrings, be sure to clean them and any others you may wear, with rubbing alcohol to kill the germs. With these few precautions, your newly pierced ears will soon heal with no infection.
