Velux and Velux Blinds: A brief history
Written by Mike Stephens

Tuesday, 29 April 2008

In 1941 Villum Kann Rasmussen, aware of a national shortage of living space in his homeland of Denmark, realised there was an opportunity for developing attic space into cheap living accommodation and he developed a roof window to let in natural daylight, and Velux was born. However, the first Velux roof window ever made was installed in a Danish school.

The Velux name is derived from the words Ventilation and Lux, the latter word being Latin for light.

Almost seventy years later the company has grown to become the leading international manufacturer of roof windows and the word Velux has become a generic term for roof windows, and Velux blinds have become equally as well known as the windows themselves. The company now provides not only solutions to obvious roof light difficulties, but offers a variety of different shapes and sizes for windows which allow architects to make positive design statements in numerous projects.

It has long been known that natural daylight has positive psychological and health benefits and the concept of space and light having energy saving benefits is well documented. In America research has shown that exposure to spectrum light results in better moods, improved attendance at work, dental health, and increased concentration levels, and Velux roof windows have contributed to the wellbeing of many people's everyday lives.

Although Velux provide a wide standard range of roof windows and skylights, along with solutions for flat roofs etc the company is still best known for its sloping roof window and blinds.
