The effective use of police lights is as much important for crime scene investigation and controlling the situation, as other aids like narcotic kits, finger printing equipments, communication equipments, and weapons. The various modifications in police lights help significantly in this.
Crime scene investigation is a delicate job and a very time critical one also. Police needs to reach the venue fast and gather as much evidence as possible before it is destroyed, and try to get hold of the suspects as well. Likewise, ultra violet lights are helpful in tracing sweat or saliva or other body fluids so that it is also used in police lights. Green lights are less used though it is often stored by police going out to sea or deeper waters in connections with investigations. It is not just the type of police lights that are used at the crime scene that can help in controlling the situation and finding faster solutions, but also the way in which they are used. This is more important about the way police vehicle lights are used while approaching the crime scene. Usually when they get the information of the perpetuation of a crime, the police arrive at the scene in what is generally known as code3 response, which refers to a response with active police lights and sirens. This active mode helps the police to find their way faster to the crime scene by clearing traffic. It also helps them to give advance information to the people waiting for help at the crime scene. However, activating police lights and sirens will warn the criminals of the police's arrival so that they will make good their escape. Some criminals try to mingle with the crowd at the crime scene in order not to arouse suspicion, but if they sense the police's arrival, they are bound to flee. So, many criminologists advocate that the police should arrive at the crime scene in unmarked vehicles, without police lights and sirens to be able to gather evidence and confront suspects better.
