While going through my e-mail this week, better known as 'speed-deleting', I came across a wonderful article that caused me to be amazed at the many similarly and comparisons to a project of mine. The article is titled 'Have You Made Your Indoor Tea Corner Yet' by Jenny Wells, the 'Tea Party Girl' (visit her site by adding a dot com to the one word, teapartygirl). Ms. Wells expressed that she needed some small private space within her home away from all the hectic world. She also suggests that most of us have the very same need to create some small 'corner' of private space in our homes for 'hibernation'. My project that I refer to is the one I've spent the last two years trying to promote. I have written articles, have had various sales rallies and promotions all suggesting the very same idea as Ms. Wells, with just one small twist. We at OLIN have had the honor to publish and retail an e-book titled 'The Call to Prayer and a Return to the Prayer Closet' by an anonymous Christian author. The main focus of the e-book is to convince the reader, Christians world over, to create some small space in their home for prayer and mediation called a 'prayer closet'. Do you see the comparison? I can only hope that Ms Wells receives less of what we've often faced. I do hope Ms. Wells isn't called 'crazy', 'silly' or appearing 'toooo much like a tea drinker'! After all those are the very same we have faced over the last couple of years, while we suggested an in home relaxing space of refuge and hibernation!
The copy of Ms. Wells's article I looked at had many comments from readers all across the globe, all praising her for a great idea. Many had written to express just how wonderful their new 'space/pantry/tea corner' is or will be soon upon completion. The newly created 'space' was taunted as the very best place of refuge and restoration by both, professional working women as well as home school moms. I must admit I was 'taken back' a bit over some of the comments because we have been attempting to convince others of very similar suggestion! As I thought and wondered why we had so many different responses, I began to understand and I must thank Ms. Wells for the difficult lesson I've learned by her example. Ms. Wells didn't first intend to exclude anyone with her message. However, she wasn't attempting to push/sell/convince the 'tea corner' to the 'prayer closet' group! This is exactly what I have been doing in reverse! Thank you again, Ms. Wells for your wonderful article and the difficult lesson you taught me! If you are over-worked, over-stressed, always rushing to here and there, AND you are a tea drinker... Why haven't you created your very own 'tea corner' as Ms. Wells suggests? On the other hand, if you are over-worked, over-stress, always rushing to here and there, AND you are a Christian... Why haven't you created your very own 'prayer closet' as detailed by the author of ‘The Call to Prayer and a Return to the Prayer Closet' e-book? Thank you again, Ms. Wells for your gift of clarity.
With this new found clarity and refocused purpose, I now ask you my fellow Christians the following for clarity and certainly not out of any sanctimonious reasons. There have been many of you that have stated, to me well over two years ago, that you agreed that some small 'sacred space' or 'prayer closet' would be a blessing to you and your family ... Why haven't you done so? How many times over the last year have you said to another, "I'll be praying for you..."? How many of you have done as I have, and quickly given a one line prayer and felt that was enough attentiveness? How many have thought as I have that life is just so rushed and hectic, and have declared that there is hardly a minute to ourselves at the days end and so we mustn't have any time for certain other activities? How many of you have, as I have, forgotten or have lost the person's name and/or prayer intention due to being unorganized and being caught up in our daily marathon? How many of you are more than just a little bit bashful of the display of religious articles around your house, and have tucked most of them away someplace safe and unseen until the Pastor comes over? Unfortunately, and I again include myself in this category, too many of us have answered yes to the above instead of yes to the very thing that would have aided us in all we do, prayer.
Upon further reflection, I began to think of all the massive, positive changes that could happen to our Christian families, and to the world if more Christians had a specific place to study, teach, pray, as well as for meditation, I began to feel a renewed vigor for the project once again. Just imagine with me for one moment. How much better and more blessed could we all be if we Christians had first, a place and secondly, the time to pray about all the things that needed changing. I think we all understand that when we have a dedicated place to pray, we will always seem to have plenty of time to go there and pray. It isn't mystical at all. It works something like this; when one goes around informing others, thoroughly, on just how much time they don't have and on how overly busy and hectic their life is, it is this very time that is wasted and could have been spent in prayer for the betterment of all! It takes time to complain and even less time spent praying. Therefore, at least attempt with me one final time, and spend your time praying and in meditation rather then informing others of just how busy you are. Just as Ms. Wells doesn't literally have to push anyone into making a 'tea corner', neither will I with regards to a 'prayer closet'. There is a certain amount of internal excitement and energy that comes from deep within one when they ponder making an in home special place for themselves. No one need feel compelled or push to do either. The mere fact that the energy and excitement to do is either present or it isn't present. No force or coercion is ever necessary. I do pause to make a note about just how happy and thrill many of the article commenters were over their 'tea corners', I do truly hope that translates for us Christians as well. Allow me to make five comparisons in closing for clarity of purpose.
Just as many people who do truly enjoy drinking tea and unwinding in their newly created 'tea corner', would never put down their tea after just one sip and get up and leave their 'tea corner'; so do I hope the very same for us Christians with regards to intercessory prayer.
Just as Ms. Wells and her group would never think for a single moment that they should be a bit bashful or embarrassed over having a small private, in home 'tea corner'. Many volunteer to show it off to visitors often; so do I hope the same for us Christians with regards to our 'prayer closet'. Just as Ms. Wells's group would long to return to their homes, and their 'tea corners', after a long and stressful day so that they could unwind in their 'tea corner'; so do I hope the same for us Christians with regards to our 'prayer closet'. Just as Ms. Wells and her group would never think to call their 'tea corner', a 'prayer closet' or any other false name out of being ashamed and fearful of looking tooooo much like a relaxed tea drinker; So do I hope the same for us Christians with regards to our 'prayer closets' and looking 'soooo religious'. Just as Ms. Wells and her group would never say that there is a Starbucks down on the corner, therefore they don't have the need to create an in home 'tea corner'; so do I hope the same for us Christians with regards to saying that because God knows what we need and what others already need, therefore we don't need a 'prayer closet' or the reason to do intercessory prayer. Yes, ok I will agree, the five comparisons may be a bit dopey. However, they do drive home the points and reasons for doing one or the other project in your home. Actually, you could very well have BOTH a 'tea corner' and a 'prayer closet' in your home! Why not? Who cares what so-and-so will say! The reason to do either or both is very evident and if one cannot see it, so be it! Many of us have made many promises over the course of our lives. Many of us haven't completed many on that long list. We all know just how fast our kid's grow up and just how fast things change. Many of us could be blessed if we only undertook the task of building a small personal 'prayer closet' in our homes. We could have a place for all of our hidden religious articles. We could have a place for family devotions as well as catechism and other religious instruction. The rewards are just so big and wonderful with an in home 'prayer closet' or a 'tea corner'. So then, why do we allow the one small phrase of, "Oh I didn't know you guys were sooooo religious", to keep us from providing the wonderfulness to our families? Who cares what 'they' say? You may call us soooo religious, call us conservative, call us Bible thumpers, call us whatever, make the commitment right now that it doesn't matter what we are called, it is about time for us to begin experiencing all the benefits God is waiting to give us and our families by having a dedicated in home 'prayer closet' and the time to pray! Possible Objections To The e-Book! "Finances, I don't have extra money during the holidays to waste on some silly e-book". "The type is too small; I need bigger type to be able to read".
