If you do not take steps to keep your pool area safe, then you could be creating a dangerous environment for your children. Many parents know safety tips for pools, especially when it comes to the fencing that surrounds the pool. However, in order for your children to always be safe while still having a good time in the pool, you will want to be careful of all possible dangers. Fencing - By county law, most United States citizens must fence in their pools, protecting the lives of their children at home and those of others. Store the keys to the gate in a secure location when the pool is not in use and be sure the gate in the fence stays locked. Most children enjoy climbing and will try their skills on a fence to get to your pool, so you will want to install a fence that is at least six feet tall or higher. It is vital that yours is tall enough to stop any climbers before they reach the top. Neighborhood fencing laws can be found in your local government offices. Alarms - Children can sometimes try to sneak into the pool, so you may want to consider a door alarm. To insure against any backyard wanderers, there are a good variety of wireless door alarms that will work. A pool alarm can also be an excellent safety device. "Good Housekeeping Magazine" recommends Poolguard alarms, as they are the best on the market today. These alarms make a very loud beeping sound if anything or anyone falls into the pool water. Normal surface tension caused by wind or falling leaves will not set it off, but children or animals can be saved quickly should they accidentally fall in the pool. Pool Covers - Pool covers can be dangerous as well as important. It is best to use a hard pool cover, as they completely cover your pool like a shell. Soft covers, however, are used most often because they are less costly. Children can sometimes fall on them and not be able to get themselves out, so use caution with these. Electric or automated pool covers can be a danger as well. Many children have unfortunately become trapped beneath electronic pool covers after accidentally setting the controls in motion. Plants - Leaves can provide much needed shade to a pool area and you may not think they are a problem. However, fallen leaves are slippery when wet and must be continuously swept up so that no one falls. Certain flowering plants and trees with slippery, small leaves can damage your pool filters and are just generally not good for your pool area. Block of Wood - Placing a medium sized wooden block in your pool when you're not using it is a good idea, especially if you are outside the city. Use one that can hold a few pounds of weight and is big enough to float. Small animals will be able to save themselves from drowning with the wooden block. Pool Toys - Pool toys with a designated storage area will more likely be put safely away. All varieties, shapes, and sizes of pool toys can be hazards if left lying around. Keep the area safe by storing all toys in a container by the pool or in the house or garage. Pool chemicals should have a separate storage area well away from where the pool toys are kept. These chemicals can transfer to the toys, which could cause a poisoning hazard for your children who use them. Pool Chemicals - Many people store their pool chemicals, such as chlorine tablets and PH balance kits, in the area of the pool. Pool chemicals must be in a locked storage box for the safety of all. Let's face it, when it comes to the big plastic box, most children are going to check it out. A garage or shed would be the best place to store your pool chemicals. This will be convenient for you and keep them out of your children's reach. The most frequently overlooked things are common sense oriented.
