Specialties in duty boots

Duty boots used by law enforcement agents span a fairly wide spectrum with adaptations for various terrains and seasons. Different features like extra ankle support; safety toes, kick toe facility etc demarcate the boots of those who need to be on their feet and active much of the time.

Duty boots are things specially designed to be worn on duty. Duty boots generally have 'territorial adaptations' in that they will be patterned differently to be worn on rocky areas, swampy areas, in water, in sandy places etc. Duty boots will also have 'seasonal variations' in that different types of boots will have to be worn in summer, winter, and during monsoons. Even dogs have their own duty boots these days.

Ankle stability is something that people who have to be fast on their feet or move over rugged terrains look for in their duty boots. Boots can be low cut, mid cut, or high top, and of these, the high top variety is the one that offers maximum ankle support. Mid cut ones will provide less ankle support than high top ones and low cut ones will give very limited support for the ankles. Yoke stabilizer is used in some duty boots for additional ankle support, and talon stabilizer and a good cinch system also provide greater ankle support.

Safety toes is a provision found in many duty boots to give added protection to toes, and is strongly recommended for use while working in places where feet are likely to be exposed to sharp objects, rolling objects, spills, or extra hot or cold surfaces. The safety toe may be a steel toe, or could be made of non-metallic composite material. Duty boots with steel toes will be slightly heavier than those with a composite toe. Composite toe boots may be better suited for people like security personnel, air port workers etc. who might have to pass frequently through metal detectors.

Lots of policemen prefer kick toe facility in their duty boots. In the kick toe provision a composite toe rolls up around the toes so that the toe edge is protected when a door has to be kicked open or a boulder kicked off. The kick toe facility differs from the safety toe provision of duty boots in that the covering is only around the toenail area. In the case of safety toe boots, much of the forefoot area remains covered.

The cutest duty boots, however, appears to be that given to the canines deployed to aid the police in all types of searches. Canine boots known as 'bark'n boots' are popular use objects among dog owners when taking their dogs on activities like a walk through inhospitable terrains, or snow or slush. It is built like a human shoe to fit the anatomical shape of the dog's paw. An upper made of breathable mesh, expansion gusset which makes wearing and taking off easy, and cinch closure straps are some of the features of canine shoes.

Canine boots became duty boots when a police department in the UK started issuing it for their dogs as safety boots. When dogs are taken for help in searching, police often have difficulty in taking them to places where there are things like broken glass or slimy stuff. Now specially trained dogs can be taken to more places because of the added protection that their duty boots offer.
