A police scanner is perhaps not just a police gear but a gear of too many people because it is used by the news media, public utility services, fire rescue services, and even criminals themselves. It is a radio scanner that can pick up two-way wireless radio transmissions from the atmosphere. The scanners that police use may be handheld scanners, or desktop scanners, which are stationary, or base scanners and PC based scanners, which are mobile
A police scanner works on the same principle of an ordinary radio but while an AM or FM radio is designed to pick up only its own band of signals, a police scanner can pick up a variety of radio signals. The term police scanner is used to refer to these two-way communicators not just because it is an important police gear but also because lots of people use it to listen to police broadcasts. These radio receivers will scan different frequencies on its own till it gets a clear signal, and will shift to another frequency if the first one becomes unclear. Ordinary people can listen in to the communication of fire fighters or police personnel through these scanners and understand the emergency of the situation when they are stuck on a road or even when they hear the screech of their sirens from home. This police gear that helps the police in responding to emergencies, and tracing criminals, may be a handheld scanner, desktop scanner, base scanner, or PC based scanner. Handheld scanners will be portable and so are the best for policemen who are on patrol duty, or rushing to the site of an emergency, or conducting searches. It comes with a belt clip so that it can be easily hooked on to the belt or uniform. These will be typically battery operated and can be run on household current, and on the electrical system of a vehicle. Handheld scanners are very handy police gear because these can be used in out of the way places where there may not be any power source, and also when there are power outrages due to bad weather conditions. The negative points of this type of scanners are that range availability, volume, and reception will be less than desktop scanners. Probability of damage due to collision, or accidental dropping, is also more with them since the unit is used in rough terrains and in bad weather. A desktop scanner will have a higher range, volume, and reception, than a handheld unit, and will be an ideal police gear so far as it is needed only for stationary use within the police station or home. A base police scanner is designed both for stationary use and mobile use. It comes with power cords and holes for bracket mounting and so lends itself to easy mounting within a vehicle. It can be run on the electrical system of the vehicle with an adapter, and can be run on household current also. Reception of base scanners can be increased by adding external antennae. As of now, PC based scanners find comparatively limited use as police gear. It is a type of scanner that is used on a personal computer. Though it is mobile and can be used inside a vehicle, it cannot be used without a laptop. Though range availability is not significantly higher in these, the words can be heard at a much higher volume. Portable use is not possible with a PC based scanner also, just as with base scanners and desktop scanners.
