Equipments for defense which are part of the police gear are as much important as the gear police need for their duties like crime prevention, riot control, burglary investigation etc. Depending upon the type of job that they are involved in, police use various types of helmets, bulletproof vests, or masks to protect themselves.

People generally associate police with their guns, batons, sirens, and lights. Most of these identifying tags are police gear necessary for discharging various police duties like chasing suspects, controlling a mob, or collecting evidence. Equally important are the police gear necessary for protecting policemen during the discharge of their duties.

Helmets, masks, and vests are among the more important police gear necessary for protecting the police. Helmets are a sort of permanent defense armor for police and they use it during routine patrols, or during reconnaissance. Besides that, there are special helmets that are part of police gear based upon the task in which they are involved. There are riot police helmet used for riot control, which will cover the face, neck, and head area, providing protection against bottles, rock pieces, shards etc. These helmets will be made of impact resistant plastic and the inside of the helmet will have padding to cushion the shock.

There are also extra strong tactical helmets with a projecting wire frame or steel grid around the face, which offers additional protection for the face. Special bomb helmets will be a part of the police gear of the policemen who have to handle explosives. Some models of bomb disposal helmets will have built-in speakers and microphone, ballistic visor, and a ventilation system that will channel fresh air across the visor on to the wearer's face. While combing areas with higher chances of exposure to gunshots, police will use bulletproof helmets.

When checking areas of chemical leaks or spills, the defensive police gear will be a chemical suit. Fully encapsulated suits are used for combating industrial hazards involving the spillage of corrosive or toxic liquids and gases. These are used together with gas masks necessary for respiratory protection. Different types of chemical suits are used for different gases. There are also lightly coated suits and masks that just prevent the percolation of liquids. These become part of the police gear when they are involved in less dangerous tasks like cleanup operations.

Bulletproof vests are designed to withstand different types of ammunition. There is a softer vest woven out of a type of fiber known as Kevlar fiber and coated with plastic and resin. The stronger type of vest, which is necessary against heavier ammunition, is made of Vectran and will be coated with ceramic or metal. It is the softer type that is generally part of the police gear while the stronger one is used more by the army. Bulletproof vest works by spreading the energy of the incoming bullet laterally and simultaneously deforming it.

During high-risk operations like hostage rescues, or controlling violent mobs, police gear may contain the stronger type of bulletproof vest that safeguards the user against even rifle shots. Some vests cover just the chest and back area while some others will cover the whole of shoulder and arms. Yet others come with different protective units for neck, arms, groin, etc. which can be attached or detached according to necessity. Some bulletproof vests will even have additional pouches that could further cushion the shock.
