Moving can be complicated enough without having the additional hassle of crossing a border thrown into the mix, even the world's longest undefended border. I grew up in Toronto; it's Canada's biggest city, but by the time I was a teenager, it seemed far too small. Determined to pursue post-secondary education abroad, I applied to a series of colleges and universities outside of Canada, including Oxford and Harvard. I didn't make the grade at Oxford, but I did get accepted by Harvard, so it was going to be off to Boston for me. Ironically, my aunt, who lived in Cambridge for twenty years, decided that she missed the Great White North and ended up Moving to Canada just as I was packing my bags for Massachusetts. Moving to the US shouldn't have been a big issue since I wasn't bringing my car with me, basically just having my parents drive me, my clothes and my laptop to Boston. Flash forward eight years and I had finished a PhD and accepted a job with a research company back in Toronto. This time, I had an apartment's worth of furniture I didn't want to leave behind, multiple computer systems, a closet full of clothes, my TV and a car. I was also engaged, and my fiancée was going to move to Toronto with me, along with all his stuff. Clearly, Moving to Canada was going to be more complicated than my move south.
