With the Christmas festivities in full swing it's the perfect time to start organising your New Year plans. Everyone loves to have fun at this time of year so treating your nearest and dearest to a Hogmanay party will ensure you start the New Year off with a bang.

If you want to throw a truly memorable shindig there a few things you can do to make sure your guests have the best time and your party goes without a hitch.

New Year is the perfect time to reconnect with all those people you have been too busy to see throughout the year so make sure you get your invitations out early. Lots of people have a busy schedule over the festive period so booking them in advance will make sure your party is the one they attend. If you've left your party planning until the last minute it's best to contact your quests directly; snail mail can be unreliable at this time of year so phone or e-mail them to make sure they save the date.

Once your date is booked and your guests confirmed you can start to plan your evening. The merriment of New Year deserves a little tipple so get in some drinks for your guests. If you're your feeling creative then make up your own special New Year cocktail that will have your guests raving about your bartending skills.

Make sure you have plenty of soft drinks for those in your party who are driving and if there are any children attending make sure you consider them too. Hunt your cupboards for some board games or set up the Xbox so the kids stay entertained. Hopefully your adult guests will entertain themselves but have some fun party games ready just in case there is a lull in the evening.

Because of the late night it's a good idea to have plenty of food available. A few nibbles are all you really need but if you really want to make your guests feel special then usher in the New Year with some canapés. If you want to include your guests in the preparations ask each of them to bring along their favorite food and you can throw together an impromptu buffet.

If you plan to host the party at your own home make sure you put away anything that could get broken and remember to check your home insurance is up to date, in case of any unexpected accidents. If you really want to push the boat out then set of some fireworks when the bells toll.

Whatever your New Year plans you can be sure that your guests will appreciate the effort you've put into organizing the best party of the year.
