With a more health-conscious and "green" world, new concerns for our health are arising. And many of this new concerns are things our predecessors would have never worried about—lead in china dishes. Although the newer dishes have lead-free glazes and decorations, some older dishes aren't as safe. If you are in the china dish buying market or trying to find a china replacement piece, make sure that you know for a surety that the dishes you are buying are lead-free and safe for continual use. Here are a few tips when you are searching for the perfect, safe china of your dreams.

  • Ask: Before you buy anything, ask about it. Your best bet is to probably find and ask the store manager. But if they don't know, ask them to call the manufacturer. And if you want to make sure that you get the safest dishes, ask if they meet the California warning standards. These standards are more strict than the federal standards. So, for the best quality dishes make sure they meet California standards.
  • Look: The United States and China are working together right now to make sure that their tableware meets the appropriate standards and requirements—including the lead issue. On each of the plates there should be a sticker to let you know that it abides by the regulations. So, just look and make sure before you buy it.
  • Avoid: If the lead issue bothers you too much, just avoid it. There are plenty of alternatives to choose from. Glass dishes will not have that potentially hazardous glaze on them. But it is lead free, if they don't have decoration on them. If they do, they have that potential to be dangerous.·
  • Enjoy: Once you feel comfortable with the china you have selected, enjoy them. They are beautiful and they are yours to use. Have a good, healthy time!
