Graduation speeches can be a combination of fun and fear in the minds of many people. They have the ability to make appearing in public a rather unattractive thing in their minds as they fear the thought of standing in front of an audience and making a fool of themselves. There is no rational need for that to be the case. There are lots of simple tips and techniques which can help you to write and deliver a great graduation speech. Of course how you go about it depends on who you are, what your role is, what topic you have agreed and how much time you have to speak. Clearly different people have different roles to fulfil and you do need to understand any duties you have. For example the school Principal will have to take a view on the educational establishment, everything that makes it work and also the future for the establishment, for example. Clearly a graduate or guest speaker will have a different purpose to the Principal.

Perhaps a better way of looking at graduation speeches is to think positively about what you can do and what you can contribute to the audience. Graduation speeches are significantly better if they are positive. No audience likes a negative speaker. Indeed those who fall, into the trap of listening to their friends who urge them to say what is wrong with the school, who have ideas on which teachers are bad and why and other bad ideas, will end up with the worst speech and perhaps a long time to regret not doing something a lot more interesting. A preferable way if you have to say something on an area that did not go well is to recognise that things did not turn out, suggest what can be done to improve and reflect on the learning pints for the future for the graduates. Using a positive mindset will let you seek out the things you can do well in your speech such as inspire the audience, help them see a great way forward, urge them to keep learning and growing, show them that perseverance pays off in the end and also how you can benefit from helping others, for example. Certainly a positive aspect will take your mind off any potential doubts you may have about your own speech making abilities.

Who you are and the duties you have as a speaker are clearly important as you need to write speech to take account of them properly. The best public speakers keep it real in terms of who they are to a certain extent. They are their own person and they speak in that way and the speech is written that way. However all speakers do need to speak clearly in a way the audience will understand and they do need to use language that the audience will understand. You may have duties like a Principal where you do need to make a lot of thanks and mention people who are at the ceremony. You me be invited because you have something special to give. For example you may be a local entrepreneur who has achieved a great deal in business. The graduates can benefit from your real life experiences and the lessons they have taught you. They will be enthralled to hear about how you did it. You may be a student speaker in which case you do need to make lots of thanks, not least to your families for supporting you. Each speaker can give something positive to the audience.

Take a positive look at what you can do with your graduation speeches and enjoy being a competent speaker. Graduation speeches can turn out to be great fun.
