Going Green as a Family

More and more people are going "green" now. Our environmental awareness has grown to new levels and we are learning that making even small choices we are impacting and changing our corners of the world. It is quickly becoming the global movement that is tying countries and nationalities together.

Little things that we have changed in our own family include recycling, we always have more recycling bins out then garbage cans. It is easy to do and is a great help towards not filling our landfills so quickly.

Another thing that we have done as a family is provide our kids with "litter-less" lunches. Every container they bring to school for lunch can come home to be used again. The schools encourage everyone to bring a "litter-less" lunch to cut back on the amount of garbage.

We have talked about using a brick in our toilet tank to reduce the amount of water. I think I heard recently that the brick isn't the way to go anymore, instead using an old pop bottle (reuse) filled with sand and water, is the new suggestion. Either way, it goes into the toilet tank and helps to displace the water so less is needed with each flush.

Our new house is really needing to be repainted, we would like to make it ours. Right now we are searching out new options for paint. I am sure that if I look hard enough there will be an eco-friendly paint that we could use. Or maybe a certain method of disposing of old paint when we are done. Times change so much and as we become more aware of our world and coming to an understanding that it is ours to take care of, we are creating more and more environmentally friendly products. Such a big ocean to sift through!!

The other way that we are trying to contribute to the eco-movement, is by talking to our kids schools. For every permission form that needs to be signed and sent back, pizza and lunch money, notes for the teacher etc...we use the little plastic zipper baggies. This way I know that the kids won't lose it and it won't become wet or damaged. However, I have 4 kids in school, and another one will be there soon enough, we have been going through the baggies like crazy!! There is a mom out there who has been able to come up with a great solution, and she has run with her vision. She planned to make a reusable, organic material tote to send with her kids. She has become very successful and has them made for entire schools!! They are so affordable and will end up saving me money in the end.

If every one of us could come up with a way to reduce our carbon footprints, like this mom did, could you imagine how much longer our earth would thrive? If we all did our part in our own little corners, could you imagine the global impact that would have? If we all stopped passing the buck, and took responsibility for our own actions, could you see where we would be in 10, 20, 50 years?

Let's all do our parts and enjoy this earth together!!
