Fire Proof Gun Safes can Bring you Peace of Mind

The main thing to know about fire proof gun safes is that they are only fire proof for a limited amount of time. They are not immune from the ravages of high heat for endless lengths of time. This may be just a technical distinction, but a useful one for consumers nonetheless. If you put enough heat in direct contact with a metal safe there will be a point beyond which the contents inside will not be protected. But that's okay. If a safe can protect your guns and other valuables until fire fighters can extinguish the fire, then you can consider your things protected. In that case, your safe did its job.

Liberty is a company that makes fire proof gun safes. They are known their products being beautiful as well as functional. Of course, they make safes to accommodate a wide number of guns. One of the things about some of their designs is some really creative use of space. For instance, using the inside of the door to house handguns is pretty slick. Shelving inside accommodates ammo and other small items. There are also optional accessories like dehumidifiers and lights, anchoring kits and storage cabinets for electronic media that make your safe more useable and customizable.

Of course, fire proof gun safes do more than just protect items from heat damage. Obviously, they protect from theft too. If you opt for a model that can be bolted to the floor you get double protection. Some people even go to the trouble of having their safe installed in the ground (think basement floor safe) so that it has natural protection on three sides, leaving only one side vulnerable at all. If you are going to be storing guns in a safe like this, they will have to be handguns. If you know this is something you want to do then have a contractor work with you to do it right.

If you are wanting a unique placement for long guns then fire proof gun safes can be installed in a wall. I love this sort of cloak and dagger stuff. Sort of like hidden desk compartments, hidden doorways and bookshelves that move aside to reveal hidden passageways. A safe in the wall isn't exactly that cool, but it's close.

Fire proof gun safes are really expensive, right? Well, that's a question best answered by saying that expense is relative. You can certainly spend tons of dough on a deluxe, high end model and get all the bells and whistles. These will definitely give your items lots of protection. But you don't have to do that to get adequate protection from the most common house fires that burn, on average, for about 30 minutes.

In studies conducted by independent testing firms, even small safes can offer substantial protection. I recently read about a test conducted that revealed that even safes in the $30-$80 range left the contents of these safes intact after a half hour of 1200 degree heat. The outside was melted and blackened, but all was good on the inside. It was only the really cheap safes that showed slight damage on the things inside.

When it comes to protecting your valuable weapons, fire proof gun safes are the way to go. Do your homework, find a good one that you can afford, and have realistic expectations if you do happen to experience an unfortunate event like a fire. There are no guarantees in life, but at least you can take reasonable steps to securing your valuables.
