Desert boots were always in use as lots of wars were fought on deserts. Over the years these boots have undergone a lot of modification. Breathable lining, vent holes for air circulation, waterproofing, outsole that provides good traction, and midsole that provides good support, are among the more common features of desert boots. Desert boots are mostly tan colored and are oil and slip resistant.
A desert terrain has so many peculiarities that desert boots are a must not just for soldiers fighting their wars in desert areas, but even for ordinary travelers to a desert. As a result there are combat desert boots as well as ordinary desert boots for men and women. The basic characteristics of these boots are the same, with minor modifications to suit trends and fashions. Almost all desert boots are made of tough, full grain leather which suits desert conditions by being breathable, low in water absorption, and mildew resistant. The nylon exterior that covers the boots also aids breathability, withstands abrasion, and dries fast. And desert boots are generally tan since the color helps to keep a low profile in a desert. Most desert boots have Gore-tex lining, which is a washable, breathable fabric, the characteristics of which aid fully in adapting the boots for desert conditions. The fabric has got millions of miniscule pores that can prevent water from percolating into the boots though it lets water vapor out through it. This allows moisture to escape and thus keeps the feet dry. If not Gore-tex lining, some form of moisture wicking lining will be there in all desert boots since hotter climates always make the body sweat more. The outsoles of desert boots will be oil-resistant and slip resistant and are designed to provide good traction. Vibram sierra design, which gives traction by the use of lugs on the sole, is a common pattern in the outsoles of desert boots. The outsoles of this design will have an ergonomic flex groove, with multi-directional lugs placed in a linear manner. The mid portion of the outsole will have what are known as ladder grip lugs which provides for a better grip on roots and other projections. Most desert boots will be waterproof and will be designed to dry fast. Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate, or EVA, is the material used for midsoles in most cases. Though dual density EVA is more in use, sometimes triple density EVA is also used, to provide a stronger midsole. A stronger midsole typically do not contribute anything from a protection perspective but it helps in correcting problems with pronation where feet could turn slightly inward or outward. A padded collar, lacing system that can be handled fast, and shock mitigation system are other common characteristics of desert boots, especially those designed for use by soldiers. Steel toe is rarely used in desert boots and shanks will also be non-metal shanks. Side vents to aid air circulation will be provided in almost all models of desert boots. The leather used in these tan colored boots does not need much polishing like other boots. For cleaning desert boots, the suede part of the boots has to be cleaned with a brush to remove the caked mud and the mesh part of it can be cleaned with a wet washcloth. Mild detergents can be used through the washcloth, but the cleaning agent should be water-soluble. Alcohol-based or oil-based cleaning agents are not good for desert boots.
