When my wife and I decided to sell our Manhattan apartment to buy a home out West and escape from the madness of city life, we had no idea what an involved project it would become. Fortunately, manufactured homes in California are an option, or things would not have turned out as well as they did. We wanted to move to our dream home: a rustic cabin in the mountains. On our wish list: rooms with a view, off-the-beaten path, but not so isolated that we couldn't have high-speed internet access for work. Not surprising, finding homes that fit these criteria isn't easy, especially not in California. After months of searching and finding only modernized (and horrifically expensive) houses, we realized we weren't going to find our dream home already built. At that point, we decided to forget about the cabin part and focus on the perfect lot, with the idea that we'd live in one of the mobile homes California seems to have in abundance while building a new house on the property. Our realtor suggested another option: Given that manufactured homes California sales have been increasing, we should see why. She took us to view the model village at the Factory Expo Home Center. What we saw totally blew us away: the best selection of manufactured homes in California, and with such a wide range of floor plans that we were hard pressed to decide which one we liked best. After taking a factory tour, during which we saw the homes being constructed in climate controlled facilities, we were sold on this method for building homes of the highest possible quality. The reasonable price and quick delivery were just the icing on the cake. The model we bought was nearly 2,000 square feet and it looks impressive tucked into a mountainside. One of the best parts about this entire experience (at least from my wife's perspective), was that even though we had given up a luxurious Manhattan apartment, the master bathroom suite in our so-called "rustic" home in the mountains puts our New York one to shame. It includes his and hers vanities, plantation shutters on windows that look out onto majestic scenery, an upgraded oversize Jacuzzi jet tub, a TV mounted on the wall, a glass-surround shower with an oversize shower head, designer touches such as crown molding and brushed nickel fixtures, and best of all: a wall-mounted fireplace.
