Installing stair treads is often better left to the professionals, especially if you are among those who are not familiar with the intricacies of installing stair parts.

All said and done, this is the DIY (Do It Yourself) age and the satisfaction of completing an installation yourself is truly unique. Given all that, if you wish to attempt an installation of a new set of treads for your stairs, I wont discourage you. The following primer will get you started on the right path. Of course, detailed instructions from the manufacturer will also be immensely helpful in this regard.

The best news is that installing a stair tread is one of the very few tasks that can be accomplished in bits and parts, without any great skills. Remember, installing a new set of iron balusters or wood newels can call for greater skills. Lets have a look at the steps required to install the stair treads all yourself:

  • Start by cutting off the stair tread is nosing, with the help of a power saw, and then finishing it with a handsaw.

  • Cut plywood, with a chop saw or a hand saw to match your tread for covering the side wall of your steps, also called the stringer.

  • Cut a piece of plywood, in a rectangular shape to give a covering to the rear part of the first step. Use glue and nail into the place ensuring that the alignment goes with the main floor nosing or the landing, if it is the stair at the top.

  • Trim your first step and install stair tread with the use of stair tread adhesive or glue. A few finishing nails can help in holding the tread in place.
  • Continue the steps above with the rest of the steps till you end up at the bottom floor.
With the right tools and a little bit of patience, building the staircase of your dreams is not hard. However, if you are not feeling quite confident about it all, or if you just get stuck, dont shy from seeking professional assistance.
