For the safety of your home, the electrical wiring should be in good condition and up-to-date. Faulty wiring in the house could cause an electrical fire or short circuit. If there is even a small problem with the wiring, it's better to get a qualified electrician on the job to ensure your safety. A poorly designed and repaired electrical circuit can also damage the electrical appliances in your house. So how do you know which electrician will do the best job? The following are a few tips on how to find the right electrician.

Licensing

Every electrical service provider should have a state license. All Master Electricians have to pass a standardized test to get this license, and only those electricians with two years of work experience are allowed to take this test. They are required to know the Electrical Code and any updated information about it. A state license itself shows that the electrician is qualified to install, plan, design and maintain any electrical system.

A Journeyman Electrician also has a state license. This is an electrician who is not qualified for a Master's license, but does work with a master electrician. Although a journeyman electrician cannot design electrical systems, he can do wiring and installations.

Permit

Ask if the electrician has a permit issued by the building department to work on an electrical project. A building inspector checks the work of the electrician to ensure that he follows standard regulations and building codes, before giving him the permit. It is another good way of finding out if an electrician is reliable or not.

Choose the Right Electrician

Like other contractors, electricians also specialize in one field or the other. Some handle the new construction site projects, while others do service calls or concentrate on commercial property. Find out the field of expertise of the electrician before hiring him. For example, if a Sacramento electrician specializes in remodeling, he will know the techniques of pre-existing wiring and electrical systems, snaking wires through walls and adding service panels.

Recommendations

Word of mouth is a great way to find a reliable electrician. Most contractors have a list of reliable electricians that they recommend to their clients. So if you are building a new room and need an electrician, ask your house contractor. Going to a local homebuilders association or different electrical supply stores to ask for recommendations can also be helpful.

When hiring an electrician, ask him to show you a copy of his state license and proof of insurance. Find out if he has liability coverage and don't forget to check his references.
