Painting a house is one of the most effective ways to freshen it up and redecorate. But don't just slap on one bland colour throughout the whole house. Take note of the direction rooms face and what they are to be used for, before deciding on colour. Rooms that face the north and west are going to be much warmer and sunnier than those facing south and east. South-facing rooms tend to be dark and cold, while those facing east are sunny in the morning. Rooms that face north and west need colours like blues and greens to give a feeling of coolness. South-facing rooms can be warmed up with pinks and peaches. The shape of the room is also important. Light colours help a room look larger, with dark colours having the opposite effect. So if your room is long and narrow, paint the long walls a light colour and the end walls a darker colour. This will help the room to appear shorter and wider. High ceiling can be brought down with the use of a picture railing around the top third of the wall. Above the railing should be painting a darker colour than the rest of the walls. Bedrooms should be painted restful colours such as blue or green, while the living room could be done in neutral shades to allow for more frequent changes in the decor.
