New Technology and the Washing Machine

For years housewives have had to put up with the same old washing machines, even if they are automatic. Now, it seems that new technology is finally being found to save water and power in the washing machine department.

Experts tell us that the front loading washing machine is the most environmentally friendly because not only does it use less water, but costs less to run. Unfortunately for the environment most people seem to prefer top loading washing machines due to the fact that they are much cheaper to purchase initially.

However, we are set to see some new technology in the washing machine department over the next few years. England has developed a front loading washing machine with a 14 minute cycle. For those people who are always in a hurry, this will be a godsend. Only trouble is that to date, it has not been marketed anywhere else. That may change soon, hopefully.

Another major change to commercial washing machines is a development in the UK of a front loading machine that uses just one cup of water. How can this be? You would think that the huge loads taken by a commercial washing machine could not possibly be cleaned with just one cup of water. But the secret lies in polymer beads that can be re-used up to one hundred times.

The cup of water is used to create the moist and humid conditions that these polymer beads need to both attract and absorb the dirt and grime from linen and clothing. The washing machine cycle not only uses 90% less water making it ideal for countries that have little water, but it also uses less power to run. And when there is no need to use lots of hot water then the cost of heating it is reduced to nil. Hopefully, the technology will soon be applied to domestic washing machines.
