A loft is a living place that may refer to a large room without any partition. Moreover, a loft may also refer to a small place that was built above a large room. Loft apartments offer a wide living space and it is well suited for a good accommodation. Lofts may also refer to older commercial buildings like warehouses and factories. These types of buildings are known as hard lofts and these lofts can be transformed into living rooms. On the other hand, new buildings with plenty of features like windows, high ceilings, and open designs are called soft lofts.

What is Loft Conversion?

Loft conversion is a process in which the large empty space in top of a building is transformed into a room suitable for accommodation. The empty attic space in many buildings can be transformed into a fine place for living. A big loft is generally divided into living rooms, bathrooms, and bed rooms etc. Loft conversion process is different from building extension or renovation. It involves dividing the existing space into suitable living rooms.

Conversion Process

Loft conversion is quite complicated compared to other minor works. However, it can also be done by non professionals with a proper knowledge of loft conversion. As the loft conversion process involves a large amount of work, most people prefer choosing professionals to undertake the task. Complete planning is necessary before initiating the loft conversion process. The entire area should be measured and room spaces should be planned accordingly.

The steeper side of the roof should be positioned in such a way that it does not hinder the comfort level of the room. Windows and doors should be constructed in the right area of the loft. The budget should be planned to meet the extra expenses involved in the loft conversion process. Most of the loft conversion process involves the construction of an extra bathroom. Hence, loft dimensions should be calculated in the right way to provide space for other rooms. Electrical works should also be managed in a proper way so that all the rooms have proper electrical outlets.

Loft conversion process does not require any legal permission, unless it involves building extension over a certain limit. Building extension limits can be enquired from the local authority. Loft conversion can be useful in increasing the value of a house to a certain extent. It also gives the benefit of providing more living space with variety of accommodation options.
