It is important for our own safety to keep our homes running smoothly and one of the most important things to check are those smoke alarms. Becoming clogged up with dust and spider webs can prevent them from working properly. They should be checked and cleaned every month, and if there are doors and windows that don't get opened regularly, these should be checked for ease of opening. If you have to escape from a fire, you don't want to find that the window is stuck. Taps and drains are other areas that can be neglected. It your taps are dripping it is costing you money. If drains are allowed to clog up, then cleaning them can be time-consuming and expensive. Instead, drop a tablespoon of bi-carbonate of soda (baking powder) down them and flush with hot water every month or so. Air-conditioning and furnace filters should be cleaned frequently to make sure these things work efficiently. Inefficient working costs you extra and deprives you of much needed heating and cooling. If you have an indoor pet, pet hairs will accumulate in filters and around the back of the refrigerator. This can become a fire hazard.
