Green Glue Soundproofing on outside walls and sheathing |

If you're re-siding or re-constructing the outside walls of your house, it would be a great idea to double up on the plywood sheathing and add a layer of the Green Glue damping compound between the layers of sheathing. The Green Glue would damp the sheathing and stop the transmission of traffic or other outdoor noises from entering your home. This would also preclude you from having to soundproof the inside walls especially if you home has plaster walls. Plaster is not a very good soundproofing material, so if you have already soundproofed the sheathing on the outer walls there is no need to disturb the inside plaster of drywall walled walls. Once you have removed the old siding or shingles from the outer walls of the house, you should be left with a plywood sheathing that is there as a vapor barrier and a solid backing for shingles of vinyl siding. I suggest adding another layer of drywall sheathing but applying a layer of Green Glue between the 2 layers of plywood. If you apply 3 tubes of Green Glue to each 4' X 8' sheet of plywood, you will increase the STC value of your walls by at least 50 STC points. Most people don't consider adding a soundproofing agent to the outer walls of their houses, but if you are in the process of re- siding you house, the soundproofing with Green Glue is something to seriously consider. There is one small draw back and that is that the Green Glue is a polymer and if it freezes it can temporarily lose it ability to dampen the sheathing. However, the good news it that once the temperature climbs back up above freezing, the polymer returns to its original state. Once you have applied the Green Glue to your second layer of sheathing, you would then either put up a vapor barrier or simply add the wood siding or shingling to the outer walls. It doesn't matter if screws or nails pierce through the Green Glue, as is not a soundproofing membrane, but rather a sound-deadening agent. Green Glue is a great way to soundproof your home from the outside and is an extremely effective sound damping agent wherever it is used. If you are in the process of remodeling your home and that remodel includes the outer areas of the house, the using the Green glue is an excellent way to get some great soundproofing without re-constructing inside walls of the house.
