Giving Your Kitchen a Makeover

Is your kitchen in need of an update? Sad but true, many of us have outdated, drab, or even archaic kitchens. In addition, many of us do not have the budget or funds to do a massive and complete kitchen remodel. So what's the next best thing? A kitchen redo: a kitchen makeover (if you will) that will breath new life into your kitchen without breaking the bank. Here's how!

Painting
At roughly $30 a can, repainting is one of the most inexpensive ways to give your kitchen an updated look. In fact, you may be surprised by how much a new coat of fresh paint can really change any room. Use neutral and muted colors to create a relaxing and calm atmosphere; bright, robust colors will create a lively and vivacious atmosphere.

Many paint suppliers (including Benjamin Moore and Behr) offer sample cans, which allow you to paint a swatch on your wall to see how you like it before you make any "color commitments."

Replace Appliances
Replace your old and outdated fridge, microwave, oven, and or dishwasher with more modern and efficient appliances. These days, newer appliances will not only save you money (most new models are environmentally friendly and efficient), but will give your kitchen and updated look. Try stainless steel, black, or white depending on the colors and motif of your kitchen.

GE, Whirlpool, and LG are just a few (of the many) appliance brands that offer a wide range of styles, models, and colors.

Replace Fixtures
Another relatively inexpensive way to update your kitchen: replace the fixtures including lighting fixtures, sinks, and even cabinet and drawer handles with more contemporary ones.

Try Moen, Elkay, or Blanco sinks for a kitchen sink that's professional grade. Visit a local lighting store to get ideas for new lights, chandeliers, and fixtures. As for new handles, visit your local hardware store, which should have a wide selection to choose from.

Accessorize!
Whether it's new window treatments, a new dining room table, or even a spiffy new KitchenAid, adding new accessories will make your kitchen look great!
