Everyone wants their garden to have the best and latest look. Garden design aims to do just this - to utilize the limited garden space that you have and convert it into a chic modern garden that will be the envy of your neighbours. Garden design is applicable not only to vast land plots and gardens, but also to smaller home gardens in your backyard. In fact, the smaller the space, the more challenging garden design gets because you want to fit in a lot of elements of style into a small piece of land.

The first thing to remember in a garden design is that plants grow. This may sound too trivial, but too many gardens are designed keeping the current state of the plants in mind, and after a few years, the plants are either too crammed up or produce an ugly looking garden. Thus keep the future in mind when you want to design your garden. But in order to that, you should have proper knowledge of plants, their requirements, vegetation scheme and height they can achieve. That's why you should do some research on the internet, ask your friends or a professional gardener for advice. Then you can get creative and think about all the combinations that you want. You can even have a healthy mix of vegetables and flowers, for example.

There is one good gardening "invention" you can apply in every garden - a Container gardening. It is an excellent addition to existing gardens especially when your garden area is rather small. You can grow many delicate herbs and plants in container gardens without the fear of them being destroyed by rough weather, because the containers can always be brought indoors. These can bring a good element of style to your garden.

You will need to consider the shape and size of your garden before setting to design it. Take a pen and piece of paper and sketch the contours of your garden. Place also the most important, already existing elements of it on paper and then create your own ideas. Draw new paths, water features, benches and imagine the plants you want to grow. Maybe then you will find some space for a garden deck or a swing. Remember also about watering - make sure that water taps are placed comfortably. Or you can design a special watering system. Everything's possible. Only your imagination is a limit. Also take note of the view - you may want your garden to look wonderful from the living room, for example, and thus want to plant more flowers in the area visible from your living room. You should also take note of the seasons when the plants will flower. Your garden cannot remain as colourful as spring throughout the year.

Planning in advance is the key to good garden design. Think of the type of plants that you want to grow in your garden. Then consider the other aspects and ensure that you get the best looking garden around.
