With the housing market in a particularly bad slump at the moment due to the recession more and more people are choosing to stay put and extend their current property rather than going through the expensive process of moving house. If you are looking to add extra living space to your home then you have two main options either a traditional brick built extension or a conservatory. Traditionally brick built extensions were the most practical way of extending a property. However with the invention of double glazing and uPVC conservatories are now a viable alternative. Before uPVC and double glazing conservatories had a reputation of been too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter they were expensive to heat and required a large amount of maintenance. Modern uPVC conservatories however are double glazed therefore they are far better at retaining heat making it easier and cheaper to keep them warm throughout the year. They also have frames built from uPVC which require very little maintenance compared to traditional timber frames which require treatment every few years to prevent them from rotting and warping. As modern conservatories are now spaces which can be used throughout the year they can be used for a variety of different purposes from dining rooms to studies and lounges to playrooms. More or less anything that you would use a brick built extension for you now also use a conservatory for. There are also several benefits to adding a conservatory to your home rather than a brick built extension. The likelihood is that if you add a brick built extension it will have a very similar look and feel to the rest of your house on the inside. Conservatories on the other hand have a totally different feel to the rest of your home. Due to the large amount of glass used in their construction they have a light and airy feel. They also offer fantastic views of your garden and the landscape beyond allowing you to make the best of the great outdoors even when the weather does not allow you to go outside. Conservatories are also generally far cheaper than a traditional brick built extension. If you are looking to extend your property and add extra living space if you have not already you should definitely consider installing a conservatory rather than adding a brick built extension as a conservatory will add many benefits which a brick extension may not.
