Breakdown of a boiler or poor running boiler may pose serious problems in efficient running of the whole house. You need to get it repaired urgently. It happens in older houses that still have older kind of boilers that they stop working abruptly. Sometimes there are few problems in the boilers which you can tackle yourself also even if you are a layman. In fact before calling the professional boiler engineer, you should take a closer look and give a try "repairing it". There are few tips which may help you make your boiler work again. In the very first step, just check the pilot light. Sometimes, it happens that if you find that your boiler is not heating and you see its pilot light is not on, just switch it off and on again. Then you should always check the amount of heat, the boiler is delivering. In case, you are getting heat but it is not of that measure which it should have been, that means boiler is not working properly. In this case, check the pressure gauge of the boiler located on one side of the device. This should read between 12-15 psi. If you find the pressure is below 12psi, it means water level is very low and you need to add more water. If you find the area around the boiler is wet, it may indicate a leakage. Now again read the pressure gauge, if it reads above 15psi, then there is more water in the tank of the boiler. To stop the leakage and restore the pressure, you need to remove the extra water from the tank. Sometimes some radiators in your house heat while others not. That means the boiler is sending air up the line. Turn the radiator bleed on the radiator until the sound of air stops. It relieves the air in the radiator.
