Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are well established supplements for individuals looking to improve their health and well-being. These are essential omega 3 fatty acids. The western diet seems to consume more omega 6 than the latter. Before taking any supplement, individuals should be aware of why they may be beneficial for managing various health conditions and improving their quality of life. There are many supplements that claim to improve health and well being. Some are even "fad" products. Omega 3 fatty acids, particularly from fish oil have remained a main stream supplement in a daily regime of health.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

EPA and DHA and a-linolenic acid (ALA) are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential in the human body. As part of the Omega-3 group of fatty acids, these nutrients are not manufactured by the body but must be consumed from other sources. EPA and DHA can be found in fish and fish oil. ALA can be consumed through flaxseed oil and other vegetable based oils; allowing ALA to be converted into EPA and DHA in the body. However, conversion is not as efficient as consuming products containing EPA and

DHA directly. Cold-water oil-rich fish have the highest amounts of EPA and DHA in their bodies; these include salmon, herring, sardines and tuna.

The possible health benefits of Omega-3s have been documented in some research studies. EPA/DHA are said to reduce inflammation, may have a benefit on mental health and mood and even joints. It may even help with concentration and memory. It may also promote cardiovascular health. Consuming fish is healthy, however too much fish can contain too many pollutants and mercury. An alternative is fish oil supplements that are pure and have been put through a "cleaning" process. This is a safer option and better if you aren't a fan of eating fish. Highly purified fish oil may be easier on the digestive system.

So what is Sesamin?

Now Sesamin, which is recently on the market, is gaining attention for its many health and wellness benefits. Sesamin is a lignan, a compound found in plants. Sesamin can be consumed in sesame seeds and sesame oil and has been safely consumed for centuries in the diet. However, Sesamin is new to use as a supplement but much is believed about the supplements many benefits from users. It is believed to be useful for cholesterol reduction and inflammation and may be beneficial for the heart. It has been associated with increasing the benefit of taking Omega 3 fatty acids by better absorption within the body.

With a world full of health supplements and juices, fish oil supplements just maybe the one product to ask your doctor about to maintain great health. As certain fad products come and go omega 3 fatty acids do not appear to be going anywhere. As more research is done on fish oil and its possible health benefits, hopefully one day it will be part of everyone's daily routine like brushing their teeth.
