Truck Drivers Health Issues

A recent study has shown that truck driving is one of the ten most dangerous careers in America. Countless hours of driving by our nation's truckers and interaction on our highways and interstates creates a high danger of being involved in accidents. However, these risks are far greater than the obvious ones . . . an unstable work schedule, long periods of sitting, lifting and bending for heavy objects, stress, fatigue and an poor diet will lead to serious health problems.

Due to these long periods of driving, many over the road drivers fighting boredom tend to develop smoking habits and along with sleeping within a truck and working long hours and receiving poor rest, physical problems do become a major problem for our trucker's health.

In the United States, 20% of truck accidents are the result of fatigued drivers. Fatigue is also causing disorders such as breathing difficulties and sleep apnea in many of the drivers. Also, women drivers show no difference in suffering from these same health issues as the males. Actually, women drivers are fighting such health issues as backache, hypertension, migraine, sinus problems and difficulties with their vision. Backaches still come in as the number two health problems for truckers. Fatigue is number one.

There are easy steps you can take that will lead to a path of better health:

  • Know the signs for a stroke
  • Quit Smoking
  • Know the signs for a heart attack
  • Make healthy fast food choices
  • Exercise while out on the road
  • Control your blood pressure
