Sexual Dysfunction Can Have A Psychological Basis |

Sex is one of the greatest sources of pleasure and heartbreak among human beings. The Father of Psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, thought all psychological problems stemmed from the patient's maladjusted attitudes towards sex. Although later proved wrong, there are many people with sexual dysfunctions that have been helped by psychoanalysis. Oddly enough, humans seem to be the main animal on the planet with sexual dysfunctions, which does suggest that we might not be the most intelligent of species after all. Premature Ejaculation This is probably the biggest sexual dysfunction doctors hear about. First off, any man with premature ejaculation should get a physical check-up just to make sure there isn't a physical basis for this sexual dysfunction. But there still is hope for premature ejaculators, even if physical causes are ruled out. The patient has to confront their attitudes towards sex, their fear of impotency and the overall pressures on their time in their lives. Sex might seem more like a chore and not any fun. The patient needs to learn not to fear impotency and also of premature ejaculation. They are then taught a delay technique (which is too graphic to explain here) to help with their problem. Hypoactive Sexual Disorder This is another common sexual dysfunction, seen in both sexes. This is where you just have no interest in sex. Even the patient's time spent in sexual fantasy is greatly reduced. Again, the patient needs to se a doctor to rule out physical problems like major depression. If nothing is found, then it's off to a therapist. It might be comforting to know that a majority of adults (over 21) have problems with sexual desire. It is especially worrying if they had the usual hyperactive sexualities as a teenager. This sexual dysfunction is also treated with a patient's look at mortality, fears of growing old, and other pressures in his or her life. Gender Identity Disorder This is a rather vague sexual dysfunction where the patient feels strongly that they have been born the wrong sex. This can even lead to not only self-hatred, but hatred of their own entire gender. This is seen to be different for homosexuality, as most gays and lesbians are quite happy with their current bodies. This is not to be confused with hermaphroditic conditions, where a person is born with stunted elements from both sexes. This isn't even to be confused with physical causes like being accident castrated as a newborn.
