Do you have a desire to help people? You may think about joining the medical profession as a medical assistant. They assist doctors with procedures and interact with patients. You may be wondering how to become a medical assistant.

Although education is not required, it is recommended. Look at community colleges and technical schools for medical assistant programs. If your program does not have a work study or internship requirement, try to get a one on your own. Many will work around your school schedule allowing you to get some experience.

As you are going through your program, take time to figure out your ultimate career goals. There are two types of medical assistants. You can be a back office assistant, which assists the doctor and deals with patients, or you can be a front office assistant. In the front office, you will be responsible for scheduling appointments and billing.

To improve your opportunities in the industry, consider getting certified. Many doctor's offices, clinics and laboratories will prefer those who have the certification. Contact the American Association of Medical Assistants for information on certification. You must be a graduate of a accredited medical assisting program.

Being a certified medical assistant will open up many doors for you. It can be a very meaningful and rewarding career choice. Be sure to work on your people skills because you will likely be the first person the sick patient will encounter. You will need to be compassionate and friendly in order to succeed in the industry.
