Irritable bowel syndrome is a common disorder related to the problem of intestines. Symptoms include abdominal cramping, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. For most people, signs and symptoms of irritable bowel disease are mild. Only a small percentage of people with IBS have severe signs and symptoms.

Causes Of IBS

The walls of the intestines are lined with layers of muscle that contract and relax as they move food from your stomach through your intestinal tract to the rectum. Normally, these muscles contract and relax in a coordinated rhythm. But if you have IBS, the contractions are stronger and last longer than normal. Food is forced through your intestines more quickly, causing gas, bloating and diarrhea. In some cases, however, the opposite occurs. Food passage slows, and stools become hard and dry.

Some researchers believe irritable bowel syndrome is caused by changes in the nerves that control sensation or muscle contractions in the bowel. Others believe the central nervous system may affect the colon. And because women are two to three times more likely than men to have IBS, researchers believe that hormonal changes can also play a role. Additionally, many women find that signs and symptoms are worse during or around their menstrual periods.

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Chronic diarrhea, constipation or both
  • Whitish mucus in the stool
  • Swollen or bloated abdomen
  • Gas

Treatment

  • For moderate IBS, more use of fiber supplements like psyllium (Metamucil) or methylcellulose (Citrucel) with fluids.
  • Medications that control diarrhea and constipation such as loperamide (Imodium).
  • Stress management.
  • Learn as much about IBS as you can. Talk to your doctor, look for information on the Internet, read books and pamphlets.
  • Identify the factors that trigger IBS. This is a key step both in managing your condition and helping you feel you have control of your life.
  • Seek out others with IBS. Talking to people who know what you're going through can be reassuring.
  • Don't hesitate to seek counseling.

For a natural approach there's TuZen (Lactobacillus Plantarum 299v). TuZen is indicated to enhance intestinal health and can help reduce the sumptoms of IBS, including: bloating, flatulence, diarrhea and/or constipation.

The recommended daily dose is 1-2 capsules a day. TuZen should be taken with food and a balanced diet or as recommended by your healthcare professional. Each capsule contains 10 billion live Lactobacillus plantarum 299v, a probiotic strain which is resitant to gastric acids to ensure optimal activity in the intestines.

Store TuZen at room temperature (15-20°C) and out of reach of children.
