In many cases the completely toothless patient won't have many choices other than complete denture.Good complete dentures usually don't need denture adhesive. But some patient will need more trust and confidence. complete dentures are composed of a large plate called the base plate with the artificial teeth mounted on it. The fitting surface of the plate should be completely adapted on the patient mucosa,As the complete dentures retention depends mainly on air evacuation between the base plate and jaw mucosa. Also muscles support and salivery secretion has a great importance in retention of the dentures. Denture adhesive usually needed when the patient suffer from decreased jaw bone volume or salivary secretion defects. Decreased jaw bone height usually happens as a result of prolonged mastication on toothless jaws, This will stimulate bone restoration as a result of pressure. SO you should make a denture just after 6 months from extraction of the last tooth because any delay will lead to bone resorption. As we mentioned before salivary secretion volume and viscosity have a major effect on denture retention. Complete dentures are more retentive if the patient has a normal salivary flow with proper consistency. Too viscid or too liquid saliva will diminish denture retention and increase the need to use denture adhesives. There is so many denture adhesive types and brands available today in markets. The adhesive usually presented in a form of paste, tape or powder. The method of using denture adhesives varies according to the form you prefer. To use powder adhesive you will need first to clean the fitting surface of the denture with a tooth brush thin rinse it with water and don't dry it completely because we need it to be a little wet to retain the powder on surface. Then you will distribute a thin even layer of the powder to the fitting surface. Too much or too little powder won't be helpful. Glow or paste systems are a little more retentive than powder but also hard to clean from mouth and denture, it is not the big deal as wiping it with a cloth will be enough. Tape systems will take a little more time to apply it on the denture. As the tape have to be cut to fit the shape and size of the denture. But some patients may feel uncomfortable with glow and tape systems as it usually cause a minor occlusion change that may be annoying to sensitive patients.
