Stained teeth look ugly and spoil a person's smile, but most stains can be treated in some way to remove or fade them. The easiest type of stain to treat is that which is simply on the surface of the teeth. It can be removed by using a tooth whitening toothpaste. A more serious kind of stain is that which becomes embedded into the enamel. This is often the result of smoking too much. Nicotine stains the teeth badly, with the stain going deep into the enamel. Caffeine from drinking too much coffee is another cause of brown teeth. They are not decayed, but the stain requires special treatment by the orthodontist. An application of peroxide gel that is left on for a specific period of time is needed to deal with these stains. Another really bad stain comes about by the ingestion of a certain antibiotic when the teeth were forming. Tetracycline is the baddie in this case, and causes a nasty grey stain to become part of the tooth structure. It is almost impossible to bleach this stain out, though some small improvement can be seen with bleach.
