On the face of it, going abroad to receive cut-price dental treatment, including whitening, seems a great way to get a desired procedure at the fraction of the price charged in the UK with an extended holiday, all rolled into one.
However, although there are people for whom that dream combination has worked, many others are left to count the cost of botched work once they have returned home with the added worry of little or no opportunity to receive corrective work or compensation. That is because when you travel abroad to pay for treatment independently you do so at your own risk.
The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has been warning against patients travelling abroad to have work done for some time; not in order to protect the interest of its UK members but rather because there has been an increase in the number of people visiting UK dentists to have botched work repaired.
Because of the increasing popularity of cosmetic dental procedures in the UK, including teeth whitening, many unregulated foreign operators advertise treatment at discounted prices on the web, tempting Brits to make the trip overseas. Even if the work performed proves to be of a reasonable standard, because of the amount of follow-up or repeat work that may be required travelling abroad becomes a false economy. Although the actual treatment may cost less than it does in the UK, the combined cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence soon mounts up and renders any saving on treatment worthless.
In addition to cost there may be care issues when receiving treatment abroad, depending upon the country chosen. Reputable teeth whitening clinics in the UK ensure that patients receive care based on or exceeding industry best practice protocols, as well as being members of professional UK dentistry organisations and ensuring that they employ suitably qualified staff. Once you enter their doors for a consultation they will give you best advice about the treatment you are seeking, and will offer a set of reasonably priced alternatives, with some even offering finance terms for suitably qualified patients.
However, the same cannot be said for dental clinics abroad and some patients risk their health as well as their wealth when opting for foreign treatment.
However, an ever-increasing number of UK teeth whitening clinics now offer the full gamut of treatments including the latest trend of ‘power' whitening, which allows teeth to be lightened up to ten shades whiter in under an hour. With convenient and effective treatments like that available in the UK, travelling abroad for dental whitening work may well prove to be a thing of the past, and therefore hopefully render the whole argument moot.
