A tooth in impacted if it does not grow through the gum properly. This can happen when the teeth are crooked, or if another tooth blocks its progress. People with a small jawbone can often be troubled with impacted teeth due to lack of room. It is often the third or last molar that becomes impacted. An impacted tooth may not be painful, but it can cause other problems.

Firstly, its pressure can cause all the other teeth to shift out of place leading to a mouthful of improperly positioned teeth. Because it remains half in and half out of the gum, it can create a painful spot that catches food and thus leads to gum infection. As it grows hard up against another tooth, it can create areas that hard to clean and so are prone to decay.

In many cases, the patient should be referred to an oral surgeon for removal of the impacted tooth. If the problem is only minor and the person is young, then the problem may simply need to be watched to see if the tooth will right itself as the jawbone grows. Many dentists recommend removal of the wisdom teeth so that they don't become impacted. If the child needs braces, then wisdom teeth are often removed first, so they don't undo all the good work.
