Risks of Mouth Piercing |

Young people tend to follow fashions and one of those fashions is to pierce parts of the mouth in order to place jewellery such as rings or studs in it. Unfortunately, this practice can lead to problems with the teeth. Dentists have seen an increase in fractured teeth as a result of wearing jewellery in the mouth. The problem comes about when eating, talking or grinding the teeth during sleep. Teeth are not meant to come in contact with any other hard implements apart from each other. When a ring or stud is in the mouth - whether the tongue, cheeks or lips - it is very likely that the teeth will come into contact with it at some time or other. The wearer may not even be aware of this until after the damage is done. It only takes one good bite on a metallic object for a tooth to become fractured or chipped. The compromised enamel is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and before long a cavity forms. Dental cavities are not the only problem to stem from oral hardware. Bacteria normally cover the tongue in great amounts. When that surface is pierced, these bacteria are washed directly into the bloodstream and travel straight to the heart. Infections can also occur in many other parts of the body. It is wise to see your dentist to make sure that good oral hygiene is being practiced before having your mouth pierced.
