Teeth whitening methods usually contain some form of bleach. Consequently, many people are somewhat put-off by the fact that they may be putting bleach into their mouth and digesting it. Teeth whiteners that contain bleach remove dirt and tooth discoloration during brushing or a similar method. Discuss this option with your dentist if this is the route you choose to pursue.

Another concern about teeth whitening is how long it will last and how often you will have to touch up your smile. There is no way to avoid some discoloration of your teeth due to aging. However, some discoloration of teeth occurs due to trauma, injury, or genetics. And, drinking alcohol, drinking coffee, and smoking will all stain your teeth as well. For these types of discoloration, a basic teeth whitener should temporarily whiten teeth; and, you can use whitening products again and again without harm to your teeth to maintain your white smile.

There are a number of options when it comes to professional teeth whitening, all of which are safe. The quickest and most costly way to get whiter teeth is by having your dentist perform a whitening procedure. Your dentist will use a higher strength peroxide-based concoction that isn't available over-the-counter. Several visits to your dentist may be necessary to remove all the stains on your teeth. Or, your dentist may suggest you use a take-home whitening kit; again, a stronger formula than your garden variety drugstore teeth whitener. Both of these methods are safe.

The risk of side effects of teeth whitening products is minimal. In general, these side effects include tooth or gum sensitivity that usually disappears shortly after you discontinue using the product. However, if you already have gum disease or sensitive teeth, you may be quite uncomfortable using teeth whitening products. But, for the most part, teeth whitening, while occasionally uncomfortable, is safe and a great way to improve your smile.
